A storywise Retreat...
This special program takes the sacred texts of the Gospels
that refer to listening, and helps participants first internalize these paradigmatic
narratives before exploring their own personal spiritual narratives.
 | In a climate of quiet prayer and meditation, participants enter into the sacred stories
and experience where they, in their personal stories, are living out the sacred texts.
|
 | This recognition leads to a new way of listening to one's life story and discovering
beneath the mundane surface, a dialogue of grace going on inviting us into a deeper sense
of gratitude for our own lives and a deeper compassion for the lives of others.
|
 | The program teaches participants the listening arts that go back to the Jewish midrash
traditions, and which have been preserved in the monastic traditions of the Christian
church known as "lectio divina." The ancient way of absorbing a sacred text did
not stop at a literal understanding, but plumbed the meanings of a text beyond the
intentions of its writer.
|
 | As a sacred text, the reader brings to it the belief that this word can speak to my life
now, and enter into a life-giving dialogue with my own personal faith journey.
|
 | The Center's modality of Narrative
Room is used in this retreat to open up and freshen up texts that have grown stale in
our religious traditions. This program has been conducted with great success with the
Alpha community of Rockville, Maryland, and the Dumbarton Oaks Methodist church,
Georgetown.
