The Internet gives the family a great tool to search the world for
other branches of the Costello clan.
The genealogy pages seem to grow at an enormous rate and trawling for the Costello's
that are listed makes one aware that there are a hell of a lot of us out there.
You can go to the web forum www.genforum.genealogy.com/costello/
where people searching for Costello's list their contacts.
People post up their enquiries about their Costello ancestors. I put Galway in the
search engine and came up with eleven posts. The most interesting one is repeated below:

One message caught my attention because it linked the Costello's
to a Fleming. Also, notice the names like our branch- the Bridgets and Michael's etc.

"My maternal grandfather, Mark Costello, was born near
Ballinasloe, County Galway around 1870. He emigrated to New York and settled in Bayonne,
New Jersey around 1890. His parents were Michael Costello and Mary
Fleming.
His siblings, so far as I know, were Thomas and Winifred. There may also have been a
Dennis, a Patrick and a John.
Thomas and Winifred came to the U.S. Mark married (Bridget) Delia McCarty from Galway
in 1896 in Hoboken, N.J. Delia's family lived just down the road from my grandfather's
back in Galway. They had seven children: Michael Joseph; John Martin; Unknown; Mary; Mark;
(Delia) Agnes; and Winifred.
I am Agnes' last-born son, having been born in 1952 in Bayonne, N.J. I don't know if
this line of Costellos is any relation to your family, but I would appreciate hearing from
you. Good luck with your work. "

Hello Paul:
Thanks for your response re: Costello. I will gather the Canadian sites for you, as well
as other ones, info follows, herein. However, true confession time here- Ha!:
Most of my work from Ireland to Canada ( as opposed to from USA to Canada to Ireland) was
done "FOR" me. A it turns out a true Irish Leprechaun by the name of Patrick
"Paddy" Waldron, Prof of Economics, Trinity College, Dublin Univ, Dublin had
researched the Costello and CostellOE families (same) from Trinereaugh, Duagh, County
Kerry. "My" Thomas Costello (b. 1796-98ish, Tri., Co Kerry) had a brother
William "Billy" Costelloe who married Catherine "Kit" Nolan. Kit's
brother is Paddy Waldron's GGG or GGGrandfather.
NOW, Paddy Waldron ("PW" for reference purposes herein), has had personal love
of family lineage/pedigree/cousins/kid's curiosity since age 11, fostered by his father of
same name. PW did research and more and more..eventually thru strange twist in the road of
life applied for a grant
at Trinity (Dobbins?? Grant), now as a "grown up" Lecturing Professor, and
traveled to Canada for 4 mo. in 1997, researching and visiting and wrote papers on
"The Costellos and Nolans of Canada/Ireland" etc., etc. He has websites galore,
and a complete GEDCOM file of 5-7
generations+ going back to "COSTELLO, No lst name married BRIDGET, No maiden
name" mid 1700's residing on Costello Family Farm/holdings in Trienereagh, Duagh, Co
Kerry"...These were parents of Thomas and William "Billy". PW and I have
cousins in common tho we are not related directly. One of "my"Costellos is still
on the 1700's Family property! PW's NOLANS spent summers and vacations on the COSTELLO
property in Tri., Kerry "forever" and sent me copies photos from his/his fathers
collection showing our Costello property, our "Cousins in Common",
"My" Costello cousins dating 1901-4 and again, 1990...Now, THIS was very
emotional for me!
I WILL get all of the Waldron Websites for you...Costellos up to your eyebrows abound!!
Both Ireland and Canada and now into USA.
The Canadian Costellos and Costelloes are the neatest! There is a school named in 1997
after Costello, others who've held office, a couple who were around a Nolan ancestor of
PWs when an entire town was burned down (possibly a result of a case of a bit too much
celebrating??) and
on and on; all of these are of "my" Thomas Costello or of his brother Wm
"Billy" Costello's lineages. Paddy has put me in touch with my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
cousins, Costellos all, and we E-m each other. One from Philadelphia (presently an
administrator of 4 high schools suburban
Chicago, ILL and who returned to Chicago to the roots of her Grandfather, after
"finding" PW and his work (and PW put her in touch with the Costello on the Tri.
Kerry Co Costello property) has traveled the last two summers to this Ireland property and
stayed there w/her (my) newly discovered cousins!!)
I COULD be wrong, but I think I recall either PW mentioning this or finding it in the
extended list of over 700 (!!!) documented Costellos, that there ARE/WERE some Costellos
in AUSTRALIA! I will look a.s.a. I can and let you know.
I have located references years 1000-1300's to MacCostello being plundered and having his
cattle (cows?) stolen and driven off by O'Rourke's and will try locate this as well. This
UNrelated to PW's great research, but from an Ireland Irish Family Website.
Canada: As to the Costello family connections there: I have info re: those buried in the
COSTELLO Family Cemetery in Horton Twp., Renfrew, Ontario, Canada; (as this Costello
Cemetery is situate on the original tract of 500 ++ acres that Thomas Costello/Mary
Quilter Costello purchased abt 1827-29 ; both of them are buried there, and I do have
copies these exact dates) and eventually this property was deeded over to some of their
TEN children (by the then widowed Mary Quilter Costello), many of whom were also buried in
this same cemetery. Strange, but the Costello Cemetery plays a KEY ROLE in my own
discovery of my roots and led to my linking up w/the work of PW.
Some years ago, prior to my Dad's death in 1972, Mom and Dad visited Renfrew and walked to
the Costello Cemetery. It was late in the day, the sun low in the sky, and they found dirt
had covered the stones flat to the ground and branches down on other stones. Mom and Dad
brushed
off what they could and Mom grabbed a pencil and pieces of paper quickly writing down the
names/dates/info from the stones..one of these names was Honora "Nan" or
"Nanno" Costello. Some months ago, while "playing" at the computer
with the Surname Costello, I came across a
reference to the name, Honora "Nanno" Costello, and one thing led to another and
there it eventually led to the "pot at the end of the rainbow" to the work of
PW. It was just after this past Christmas when, at 2:00 in the morning, I linked
"My" Costellos into PW's Costello's and found I was "back home" in
Ireland. The best was when PW confirmed that "My" Costello cousins, desc. of Wm
"Billy" Costello, my GGGUncle, were still in ownership of the property.
So, believe it or not, this is a shortened version. I keep in contact w/all of my Dad's
brother JohnCostello's children and their families (almost all live in State of New
Jersey), his sister Gert Costello Ryan's family, (New York State) and his Canadian sister
Nora Costello Chateauvert's family ,(Ontario, Canada). PW has put me in touch with a
"Doyle", my 2nd cousin of Toronto Can, now in London England...(Neither of us
knew of the other, previously). Many of us were all together here for my daughter's
wedding in Aug '98.
Sooo, this is "My" story...lots more, but enuf for now. I just clicked onto your
website...wonderful..and I will read it in depth. However, "your" JOHN Costello
MAY play a part in "my" Costellos. There is a very well documented lineage for a
John Costello..he was a contemporary of my Thomas and Wm "Billy" Costello; PW
more than suggests that this John may indeed be a sibling of my Thomas and Wm
"Billy"; although the lineage is documented/researched, the tie-in has not as
yet been made. It is improbable that there were only two children born to Thomas and
Wm "Billy's parents; This John's desc., also a John, resides in California and also
has contact with PW.
I will locate all info for you as to sources and get off, soon. WIth all of us working,
and if "Your" Costellos have the determination and grit of ""My"
Costellos, we will surely come to the answers that we seek!!, and hope that they are
linked!! I look forward to hearing from you.
Best of the Best from one Costello to another!!,
