Notes from Sister Catherine Mary Costello's letter to the Costello's dated 10-12-1984. Sister Katherine is the daughter of James Costello who came directly from Ireland. "Two girls, Bridget and Mary came to Australia and four boys, Michael (your grandfather) Martin, then some time later, James (my father) and John. John wanted Dad to stay in Western Australia with him but Dad came on to Queensland to Michael at Wanora. Dad never heard of John again. The only news Dad got of his relatives in Ireland was through his cousin Sister Mary Cecilia- a Poor Clare sister in England. She wrote to Dad regularly, and we were all lined up at Christmas time to write to her. She passed away about 1942. We wrote to Nottingham but never got a reply." In a more recent phone call to Sister Kit when I was visiting Menlough, (June 1999) she told us that James, her Dad came out when he was 12 which would make it in 1885. He was schooled in England and so didn't know Garbally that well. When he came out to live with his Uncle Mick in Wanorah, people thought that they were brothers but they were actually nephew and uncle. The other brother John went back to Ireland. Sister Kit remembered having relatives named Kenny stay with the family. We have James and MIchael as brothers? But Sister Kit says that they were uncle and nephew! Perhaps we have two generations of Costello's migrating together? But now I am really confused. Who then are James' parents if not Thomas and Bridget? That's what it says on the marriage certificate.
On What ship and from where?Searching the passenger manifests in both Port Adelaide and Brisbane reveals quite a number of Costello's and Costelloe's Did the family originally spell their name with an "e" as in COSTELLOE?
Some Leads in the State ArchivesIn Adelaide-( at the State Library and Maritime Musuem, Port Adelaide) we read of a Bridget Costelloe who arrives on the vessel Glamis on 12/6/83 and is listed as a Domestic Servant. Also, a James Costello on the vessel Iberia arrives in Adelaide also in 1886 and is a labourer. But does it make any sense for them to disembark in Adelaide when they are headed for Brisbane? Maybe these are not our ancestors. In Brisbane (at the State Library) time prevented us from pursuing each name on the microfische of immigrant arrivals, but these appeared as ones worth following up- Michael Costello - aged 25 years, a nominated passage- and Mary Costello- aged 19 years, a free passage on ship Darling Downs dep London 25.7.74 and arrived Brisbane 5.11.74. The names are right, but is it a little earlier than we expected. If Thomas and Bridget marry in 1844, then Michael is born 1849 but our genealogy has him born in 1859. If that is correct, this is not them. The same date discrepancy comes up in other entries, as in Mary Costelloe aged 26 years and James Costelloe aged 19 years departs London 8/6/77 for Brisbane on the ship WIndsor Castle. There are mentions of Bridget Costelloe Miscrofische

The records no doubt will reveal the answers if anyone in the family gets interested in being a genealogical sleuth. We would suggest looking for dates around 1885-6 which would mean that Michael, the eldest on our genealogy, is about 26 years old, 1859 +26= 1885. But he marries in Ipswich in 1883, so that makes it a bit hard to bi-locate. Michael and the other three must arrive pre-1883. Going on Sister Kit's recent recollections, James was 12 years old when he arrives in Australia, which also makes it 1885. So James and John arrive in 1885 or 86.

Bridget and Thomas' son, Michael Costello left Ireland for Australia in 1880 and marries Catherine Connor in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ipswich on the 30th of October, 1883. They lived on a property around where the RAAF base Amberley is today. The two younger Costello boys, John ? and James, (born 1873 married 1899) come out from Ireland to track down their family in Australia, and especially the Costello/ Connor family.
The family memory is that James came out as quite a young lad of 12. (It was 14 actually!) So if the first members of the family come out in early 1880's, then James might come out as a teenager and be around 1885-6. (Close-1887) Hence a passenger manifest in Fremantle might list John and James around that time. If the story holds, only James makes it to Brisbane, or does John come on too?

There are at least 21 marriages of the children of the third generation-How many children are there in the fourth generation?
There are at least three children that I know of born into the fifth generation. And for the first time, the family has grand-grandparents who witness the birth of great grandchildren.
